Syngenta – Biology Research Facilities

Syngenta

The Opportunity

  • Due to a global restructuring programme by Syngenta, there was a need to compress the facilities at Jealott’s Hill into a smaller campus which required part of the Biology Research Facility to be remodelled, upgraded and refurbished.
  • The Biology Compression project impacted on two existing buildings, two existing glasshouses and a new research building.
  • Austin was commissioned to provide design and construction services, ensuring that critical existing operations were maintained without major disruption.

The Solution

Demolition of an existing glasshouse and construction of a new research building housing Defra certified insect production laboratories and formulation laboratories. Within the existing buildings work consisted of laboratories for Defra certified insect production, insect incubation and controlled environment rooms for rearing Defra licensed plants. Upgrade and refurbish of an existing formulations laboratory to accommodate a walk in spray/ scrubber booth. Existing greenhouses and environmentally controlled rooms were also upgraded to improve containment in accordance with Defra requirements. Extensive remodelling or replacement of services such as electrical infrastructure distribution; chilled water and heating plant; fire alarm system; hot, cold and reverse osmosis water system; heating and cooling including better energy efficient systems.

All work was undertaken within a safe working environment to protect staff and visitors. This is the ninth major project delivered by Austin on the Syngenta site at Jealott’s Hill, Bracknell.
