Three major projects for AstraZeneca

AstraZeneca has recently made significant investment in pharmaceutical facilities at its Macclesfield and Alderley Park sites in Cheshire. Three major projects have been undertaken, with Austin playing a lead role in an alliance partnership.

Austin undertook conceptual and preliminary engineering solutions, detailed designs of major elements of the work, project and construction management services and acted as Principal Contractor within the Alliance Team.

Quality Assurance Building (QAB), Macclesfield

A total of 4,500 sq.m of an existing three-storey Quality Assurance Building (QAB1) at Macclesfield was refurbished in three phases. The major objective of the project was to increase the Quality Control testing capability for new and existing products whilst maintaining the operational presence.

Investigational Product Support (IPS) building, Macclesfield

The 7,000 sq.m PAR & D, Investigational Products (IPS) building at Macclesfield provides facilities support to the development of new pharmaceutical products to satisfy regulatory requirements to prove the safety, quality and efficacy of new drugs.

Safety Assessment Accommodation (SAA) building, Alderley Park

The 12,600 sq.m Safety Assessment Accommodation (SAA) building at Alderley Park assesses the safety of new pharmaceutical products.

Return visits to the food industry…

…British Bakels in Bicester

Austin has worked with Bakels over a number of years at its sites in Australia, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

For British Bakels, Austin designed and built a new factory on a greenfield site at Bicester in Oxfordshire when the company moved from Slough.

Austin has since designed and built each phase of the subsequent expansion of Bakels’ warehouse and production space for powder and paste products for the baking industry.

Bakels’ success in England has now necessitated a further bold expansion of the original factory of some 3,600 sq.m. This will cater for wet production, loading, materials storage, laboratory and site infrastructure.

Bakels relies on Austin to keep its product moving while Austin designs & builds around the site.

…Nestlé in York

Austin has recently completed the refurbishment of the Nestlé Product Technology Centre at York and added 1,900 sq.m of new space.

The original building was designed and constructed by Austin in two distinct phases over a decade ago, comprising a laboratory/administration element and a pilot plant. It is one of Nestlé’s primary centres for worldwide confectionery research and development.

The project required in-depth planning to perform the work through seven distinct phases, while maintaining client operations and ensuring hygiene regimes were not compromised.

The Pilot Plant Hall was extended, the main laboratory was relocated, administration areas were upgraded, storage capacity was increased and a general improvement in people/work flow and hygiene control was accommodated.

Austin provided all study work, concepts, engineering and construction management including planning and cost control services.

Austin completes two new projects

Advantica Ltd

Austin has completed the design and project management of the reorganisation of 33,000 sq.m of space at premises in Loughborough for Advantica Ltd.

This Building Rationalisation Project involved the consolidation of Advantica operations into half the building space and stripping back the remaining area into shell and core space.

Existing office area accommodation was evaluated and a solution developed to reduce space, improve layouts, provide flexibility and create a better sense of focus and identity.

Health Protection Agency (HPA)

For the HPA site at Porton Down, Wiltshire, Austin has designed and constructed two projects; one for biopharmaceutical products and the other as a cryogenic storage facility
for cell cultures.

The pharmaceutical stores facility was designed to meet the regulatory requirements of the MCA in the UK and the FDA in the USA, and included specialised flammable and corrosive storage facilities, dispensary, wash-up, QC sampling, walk-in cold rooms and an office suite.

The state-of-the-art ultra low temperature cryogenic storage facility for cell cultures included a 20,000 litre liquid nitrogen dual reservoir system, automatic filling for 40 storage vessels, the latest telemetry monitoring systems and oxygen monitoring systems.
